Walk It Off Visits Project Walk Orlando!

As many of you know, our SCI Recovery Trainers, Taylor, Alyssa and Rebecca, went down to Orlando for the last week of January to visit our friends at Project Walk! If you are unaware of Walk It Off’s origin, Heather and Kevin went down to Project Walk in 2009 shortly after Kevin’s accident. While at Project Walk, they were amazed by the innovative physical therapy Kevin received that was focused specifically on spinal cord injury recovery. After their time at Project Walk, Heather and Kevin decided this special type of therapy needed to be available in Canada and that’s how Walk It Off was born.

Over the years, Walk It Off has maintained a special relationship with Project Walk Orlando. Heather and Kevin have continued to visit Project Walk Orlando over the years to experience their therapy techniques; not to mention getting a small reprieve from the Canadian winters in sunny Orlando. This year, the SCI Recovery Trainers were the lucky ones heading down to Project Walk Orlando to experience and learn first hand all about the exciting sessions happening there!

This year, Walk It Off is also fundraising for a larger facility! We have been hard at work growing over the last couple years and we are outgrowing our current home and looking to expand into a bigger one – Not that we don’t like all being in such close quarters, but we think everyone can agree, it’s getting a bit tight!

Walk It Off Clients Participate in 2015 Parapan Am & Pan Am Activities

I think it’s fair to say that seeing athletes of all different abilities competing in many different sports caused a bit of “panamania” here at Walk It Off. From Canada placing second in overall medal count and our very own Anita Kaiser in the PanAm torch relay to Kevin Mills being asked to participate in the Parapan Am torch relay and complete a handcycling demonstration at McMaster University, it’s hard to not get excited about it!

ICARE – Intelligently Controlled Assistive Rehabilitation Elliptical

This piece of equipment differs from a typical gym elliptical machine by allowing individuals
with varying disabilities the opportunity to stand and take strides safely. A harness is used to
support the individual while increasing or decreasing the amount of weight that goes into the
feet. The ICARE offers the option to exercise with different degrees of motor assistance. The
ICARE can be used as a typical elliptical or set to move an individuals legs when the motor
senses muscle fatigue. It can also be set in automatic mode for those with complete paralysis.

FUN, FUN, FUNdraisers for Spinal Cord Recovery at Walk It Off

Walk It Off is delighted to announce that over the upcoming months we will be hosting multiple fundraisers. As a not-for-profit organization, we depend on the generous support we receive from the community, groups and individuals during these fundraising events. Donations and funds raised go directly into subsidizing treatment cost for our members as well as into purchasing new equipment that is vital to our members’ recovery process. These generous donations are the reason we are able to continually improve our services and assist our clients on their path to recovery and wellness.
