Charlie Adams

Hello, My Name is Charlie Adams.

Before my injury I was an avid skier. My wife and I spent our winters in Golden B.C., skiing in the mountains every day. We also enjoyed mountain biking, water-skiing, and rock climbing.

I was injured two weeks before I turned 65. While working as a self employed arborist, a tree I was in broke beneath me at a bad spot. I rode it to the ground and probably would have been ok except a large piece of the tree landed on my back. My injury consisted of a T8 burst fracture, T7 and T9 fractures resulting in T6 to T11 fusion with rods and screws. I was told this was a complete spinal cord injury. I also had a non-displaced C2 fracture, broke my right scapula, 11 rib fractures and a collapsed lung.

I spent 2 weeks in Sunnybrook hospital and 9 weeks in Lyndhurst Rehabilitation centre. The real work started December 5, 2022, five days after my release from Lyndhurst, with my first visit to Walk It Off in Newmarket. They had been highly recommended by several sources.

Now, 3 months post injury, I have already surpassed my prognosis of no feeling or use of anything from my belly button down to being able to engage my lower back muscles and to a lesser extent, my glutes. I continue to work up to four hours a day at home as well as biweekly visits to Walk It Off in pursuit of all the gains I can get so that I am stronger and able to get back to the active life that we enjoy so much.

As a self-employed arborist, I had no personal injury insurance so all expenses are “out of pocket”. Any contribution towards my therapy would be greatly appreciated.

Thank You So Much, Charlie
